Daughter of Ralph W. Disney and
Beverly Broun Berry
Wife of Michael Harney
Mary Vansant Disney, 56, passed away on August 20, 2009.
To Michael, she was a loving wife; to Anna and Rebecca (Stella), a devoted and caring mother; to Sally and Bob, the inspirational sister everyone should be blessed with; to Beverley, a beautiful, intelligent and precious daughter; and to her thousands of friends and acquaintances, a kind, giving, fun-loving, vibrant personality who lit up every room she entered.
Despite suffering from the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis her entire adult life, Mary lived life to the fullest. An international traveler who gathered real-world experiences like fragrant rose petals in a basket, Mary spread those petals to provide a window into her soul with wonderful tales of her beloved journeys.
Mary was born on July 2, 1953 to Beverley and Ralph Willard Disney in Norman, OK. She was a graduate of Thomas Alva Edison High School in Tulsa, OK, and an Honors graduate in Education from Austin College in Sherman, TX. She taught French at Sherman High School before moving to the Atlanta area to teach at The Paideia School. Always a vocal advocate of education, Mary volunteered her time and considerable talents to The Howard School, which was attended by both daughters. In addition, she was involved in numerous charitable and art-related activities in the area, providing hands-on and financial support. A life-long learner and avid reader, Mary regularly attended several Atlanta area book clubs with her many friends including Feed & Read and The Neighborhood Book Club.
In July of his year, family members gathered in Bella Vista, AR for a reunion that provided everyone with the opportunity to spend time with their cherished Mary - a small comfort to those so influenced by her spirit and who now miss her so very deeply.
Michael and Mary were married on December 22, 1987. Daughter Anna arrived on March 5, 1989 and Stella was born on April 15, 1992. Mary is survived by her husband, Cisco/Scientific Atlanta senior executive Michael Harney; daughters Anna Margaret Harney and Rebecca Katherine Harney of the home; her mother, Beverley Broun Berry Disney of Pineville, AR; her sister, Sally Disney Rowe of Dallas, TX and her husband, Reg; her brother, Robert Berry Disney of Dacula and his wife, Terry; and her uncles Robert Garvin Berry and Frederick A. F. Berry, both of Tulsa; several nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces and cousins; and three valued members of the household: Marteca Palmer and Cathie and Ryan Adamson.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, geologist Dr. Ralph W. "Doc" Disney; her brother, Wesley Ernest Disney, a renowned photographer and artist of Burlington, VT; paternal grandparents, former Oklahoma Congressman Wesley E. and Anna Vansant Disney; and maternal grandparents, Robert G. Berry and Vivian Minor Fulghum Berry. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25 at the Patterson Funeral Home, 1020 Spring Street NW. Burial will be in the City of Decatur Cemetery, 299 Bell Street. A reception will follow at the family home. The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of Mary Vansant Disney to the and the Amyloidosis Foundation.
