"Mrs. L.M. Chapman Dies In Lostine"

"Members of Prominent Family Had Lived In County Near Lostine 32 Years"

Mrs. Pleasant P. Chapman, wife of L.M. Chapman, died Tuesday evening at the family home in Lostine. She had been ill only eight days, of bowel trouble. The funeral is to be held this Thursday afternoon in Lostine in which place the burial will be. Rev. I.B. Self will conduct the services.

Mrs. Chapman had many relatives and friends in this county and in the Grande Ronde valley. She was born in Pennsylvania, May 29, 1846, and was married October 30, 1861, to Mr. Chapman at Chariton, Iowa. They came to Oregon in 1973, settling in the Grande Ronde valley. After eight years of residence there they moved to Wallowa county which has been their home ever since - for 32 years. They lived on a farm for years, giving to the region north of Enterprise and Lostine the name of Chapman district. More recently they moved into Lostine to be freed from farm work and responsibility.

Two children survive, J.J. Chapman who lives with his family in Chapman district, and E.W. Chapman, who lives in Lostine at his father's home. Two brothers are living, one W.T. Wade of Seattle, being now in Lostine. The other, G.I. Wade, lives near Joplin, Mo.

Mrs. Chapman, who was a Wade, was a double cousin of the elder generation of the Wade family which is so prominent in this county.Her cousins in this family are Sam Wade, Aaron Wade and Mrs. martha Whitmore of this county; Thomas Wade of Island City, Mrs. Samuel Brooks and Mrs. Charles Meyers of Summerville, Mrs. Ruhama Laughlin of La Grande, Jesse Wade of Walla Walla and W.T. Wade of Portland. Ferris Wade, who died at La Grande, was another cousin.

Mrs. Chapman was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was universally respected for her high character and many excellent traits.
