Robert E. 'Bob' Daily, 93, a resident of rural Potlatch, Idaho, and retired farmer died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, Idaho. Arrangements are pending with Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, Wash.
Funeral services for Robert Daily, age 93, a retired wheat farmer, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Potlatch Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Larry Veith and Kathy Kramer co-officiating. A private family burial at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse will precede the ceremony. He passed at his home doing what he enjoyed, driving the tractor and working the land.
Robert was born April 11, 1917, in Palouse, to Lester and Gertrude Daily. He attended the Daily School and graduated from Palouse High School in 1934. He went on to graduate from Washington State College with a degree in agricultural engineering in 1939.
He and Betty Horrocks, who was a school teacher, were secretly married on Nov. 20, 1937. After Robert's graduation from college, everyone thought they were going to announce their engagement when in reality they had been married for two years.
In 1941, Robert raised his first crop. They moved to the homestead in 1943, where they lived and farmed until his passing. Upon his retirement from farming in 1982, he and Betty took a six-month trip to Egypt, working for the Egyptian Major Cereal Improvement Project, showing the local farmers how to use modern technology to improve their own production.
Robert and Betty enjoyed following their daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Ed, to the different states they were stationed, making it a point to visit on all holidays and special occasions.
Robert enjoyed bowling (the rare left-handed bowler), hunting, golfing, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. Robert was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you listened, and when you made a mistake he did not chastise you but greeted you with a big grin and guidance of how to do it better. Robert was a devoted husband, a loving father, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great-grandpa.
He was very active in the Shriners, Latah County Grain Growers, Potlatch Presbyterian Church and the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter; one son; three grandchildren and their spouses. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Betty; daughter Diane K. Daily; brother John; and two sisters, Meredith and Eleanor.
Kramer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
