Former Anchorage resident Mary Mohr, 102, died Feb. 18, 2009 at Valley Medical Center, Renton, Wash. A service was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Renton with burial in Hoven, S.D.
Mary was born Nov. 23, 1906 in Hoven to Joseph and Matilda Mohr. She was the fourth of 11 children and the last one living. Mary attended Catholic grade school in Hoven and high school in Mankato, Minn. She then took nursing training in Aberdeen, S.D., graduating in 1927. She worked as a registered nurse in South Dakota. In April 1952, she moved to Anchorage, where she lived and worked for the next 20 years as a registered nurse at Providence Hospital.
She was in church in 1964 when the earthquake hit. In November 1971, at the age of 65, Mary retired. She then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, and did volunteer work two days a week at Queens Hospital. In 1988, she moved to a senior citizens apartment in Renton, Wash., to be closer to her nieces.
Mary would walk to Mass at St. Anthony Catholic Church daily. When she could no longer walk it, friends would pick her up. The last few years she watched Mass almost daily at her friend's apartment. Mary liked to travel and made trips to China, Japan, Europe, New Zealand and around the United States. For her 90th birthday, she flew on the Concorde from New York to Paris and returned on the Queen Mary II. For her 95th, she returned to Honolulu to celebrate.
Her goals were to live to see the year 2000 and to live to be 100. She achieved both goals. In 2006 she enjoyed celebrating her 100th birthday with a party given in her honor by her nieces.
Mary requested memorial gifts to Father Lane's Memorial School Fund, 314 S. Fourth St., Renton, WA 98057.
