Earl Reece Burns, of Cherokee, passed away June 1, 2011, after a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. June 3 at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee, with the funeral service immediately following at 3 p.m. He will be buried at Maud Cemetery, in Maud, Ala.
Earl was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, brother and friend to many. He also was a proud grandfather of three little boys, who he adored and who adored him.
Earl was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Maud, Ala., to Vera Pauline Phillips Burns and Louis McKinley Burns. He was baptized at a young age at Maud Church of Christ, where his daddy served as an elder. He graduated Cherokee Vocational High School in 1959 and went on to complete his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Auburn, receiving his BS in agriculture science and his MS and Ph.D in astronomy and plant physiology.
During his undergraduate studies, he married his high school sweetheart, Lana Thomason. After graduate school, he worked at Mississippi State University and the Auburn Extension Service before accepting a permanent position with TVA. He worked at TVA from 1975 to 1997, applying his expertise in aquatic plant management.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vera and Louis; his sister, Alma Jean; and his infant son, Phillip.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lana; his two daughters, Lara and Cary, and their husbands, Brian Busby and Chad Lopez; his three grandsons, Jack Lee Burns Busby, Benjamin Reece Busby and Kal Raoul Burns Lopez; and his two brothers, Louis Ray and David Burns.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to the Maud Cemetery Fund or the nonprofit cancer organization, Facing Our Risk (FORCE), which supports research and education on hereditary cancers (facingourrisk.org, donate under Earl's name through this link: tinyurl.com/3k2myak).
Pallbearers will be Mark Maxwell, Ray Burns, Jim Young, Gary Walker, Kendrick Burns, Forrest Smallwood and Jeremy Campbell.
