Robert was born April 4, 1925, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first of 5 children born to Frances Thelma Rodrick & Robert McKee Lackey, Sr. The family later moved to Lexington, Virginia and then Newport News, Virginia. He met his wife Ruth Overbey in Newport News. They married in Elizabeth City, NC, in 1943, shortly before he had to leave for WWII. He served 2 years in Asia [Bismarck Archipelago, East Indies, New Guinea, and the Southern Philippines] as a corporal on Coxswain Landing Craft #838. When he returned, he & Ruth made their home in Newport News and had 2 children. Their lives were not harmoneous and he eventually left the family. He died a few months short of his 42nd birthday on 1 Dec 1966, in Cleveland, Tennessee. He was buried in the Garden of Devotions at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, North Lee Highway (extension of Keith St.), Cleveland, TN.
