Gladys Estelle Mayfield Walling, 96, of Manhattan, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Meadowlark Hills-Collins Landing in Manhattan. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec.17, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Leavenworth, Manhattan, with Reverend R. Cam McConnell officiating. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City, with the Rev. Joyce Daniel officiating.
Born on Aug. 14, 1908, in Iola, she was the daughter of Ernest Kirtley and Calla May Parman Mayfield. On May 12, 1927, Gladys married Norman Alton Walling in Newkirk, Okla. Gladys was a devoted loving partner to her husband and mother to their four children. They resided in many cities due to Norman's employment with the Santa Fe Railway, but considered Arkansas City their home town. She had been active in the Hyacinth Chapter of Order of Eastern Star in Kansas City, Kan., and had served as Worthy Matron.
Survivors include her children, Eugene Kirtley Walling of Ogden, Utah, Jack Hugh Walling of Lathrop, Mo., Norma Sue Klingler of Manhattan and Geraldine Elaine Rebar of Kansas City, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. Gladys' husband preceded her in death in 1987.
A memorial has been established for the Meadowlark Hills Foundation. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan.
