Adeline Slater was born in Harvel, Ill., December 26, 1860, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grace Vosburg at Lawton, Okla., August 1, 1930, aged 70 years, 7 months and 22 days.
When a small girl she moved with her parents, George and Sarah Slater, to Litchfield, Ill., where she was educated in the public schools, beginning the interest in education which was to continue through many years of public school teaching, several of which were in this state. This interest was also manifest in her family and social life.
During her early youth she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, beginning the beautiful structure of that noble Christian character whose influence was greater than mere words. She was loved for her pleasing personality, her kind loving manner, and while her tasks on earth are completed, her influence cannot be measured.
In 1877 she married to Dr. Ezra J. Hughes who preceded her in death ten years ago. To this union seven children were born, all of whom are living and all save one, R.L. Hughes, were present at the funeral. The son, Lloyd, with his wife had visited her six weeks previously but was unable to attend the funeral.
Dr. and Mrs. Hughes, with their family moved to Godard, Kan., then on the frontier about 1880 and in 1900 moved to Oklahoma near Taloga.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church at Lawton, Okla., and her body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in the Del Norte cemetery near Drummond, Okla.
She leaves to mourn her passing, one brother, E.E. Slater of Hornsby, Ill.; seven children, R.L. Hughes of Pipestone, Minn.; Mrs. Pearl Griggs of Drummond, Okla.; F.H. Hughes of Geary, Okla.; Mrs. Evelyn Sabour of Perry, Okla.; Leslie Hughes of Seminole, Okla.; Mrs. Grace Vosburg of Lawton, Okla.; and Paul Hughes of Oklahoma City; also three grandchildren and one great grandchild; as well as a host of friends are left to mourn her. Other relatives are Mr. B.F. Hughes and wife, their son, V.L. Hughes and his wife all of Drummond.
