Thadeous Cooley was born on April 15, 1881 on a farm near Lennox, in the Dakota Territory, to Benton & Lydia (Lovell) Cooley. Thad's place of birth has also been given as Mason City, IA and Sioux Falls, SD; however, Benton Cooley filed a claim at the Sioux Falls Office of the Bureau of Land Management for land lying between the towns of Hurley and Lennox, in what is now South Dakota, on Mar 30, 1881, so Lennox is probably the most accurate place of birth.

Thad and his family soon moved to Rapid City, SD, and lived near what is now Ellsworth Air Force Base. Around 1891 the family, including several adult children, siblings of Thad, moved to southern Minnesota, near a settlement called Loon Lake, in Jackson County. Thad's known siblings were William, Eugene, Fay and Fred, Mary, Nellie, Bertram, Artie Lee (who died in infancy), and Arthur Floyd Cooley.

Thad married Charlotte "Lottie" Ellsworth on March 8, 1900. They had eight children: Glen, Maebelle, Ruth, Eugene, Clifford, Marjorie, Dorothy, and Juanita.

Thad and Lottie lived in Iowa and North Dakota before settling in Crow Wing County, MN for several years. There one of their sons, Eugene, died tragically in a fire.

Thad later moved to the Superior, WI area, but retained close ties to his family in Crow Wing County, including his son Clifford. Thad was stricken with illness while working in the Duluth-Superior area. He was hospitalized in Duluth, MN and never recovered. [One obituary states that he passed away in the hospital in Duluth, MN; another that he passed away in a hospital in Madison, WI.]

Family members surviving Thad are listed in the obituary below, with the addition of his brother, Fay, of North Dakota, who was not listed in the obituary.
