Legion To Be in Charge Of Rites Sunday For Grover C. Bannister
El Reno, Oct. 5 – Ten years ago this month, Judge C.A. Bannister of El Reno, received word from the United States war department that his son was dead, that he had been among the missing when several hundred American troops had been cast into the sea off the coast of Scotland when the troop ship Otrano was rammed by the steamer Kashimer, Oct. 6, 1918.
The war department, then in the midst of directing troop movement to France for the final drive of the war, never was able to report to the family what end had come to Grover B. Bannister, the son. The manner of his death never could be learned.
Saturday, on the tenth anniversary of the boy's death, his father will receive his son's body, brought home from an almost unmarked grave on the coast of Scotland, where it was buried after being picked up on the seashore.
Through the years, Bannister's family believed he drowned and that his body had not been recovered, but they waited hopefully for word from the war department.
Six weeks ago that word came. The Bannister boy had been found, his body identified among a dozen take from a grave yard in Scotland to be removed to a national cemetery in England.
The father immediately requested that his son's body be returned to native soil.
Saturday, exactly ten years to the day, from the date of his death, the body will reach El Reno. Funeral rites will be in charge of the El Reno American Legion post. Services will be conducted Sunday from the Methodist church at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
