WEST ONEONTA - Harold Austin Barney, 85, of West Oneonta died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 18, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 15, 1917, in Canajoharie, a son of John Edward and Magdalene (Moore) Barney.
Following his mother's and father's deaths in 1918 and 1922 respectively, he became the adopted son of his great-uncle and great-aunt - Austin C. and Nora (Dixon) Barney.
He and his adoptive family lived in Mount Vision and then later moved to West Oneonta.
Harold graduated from Laurens Central School in 1934. Upon graduation from the Utica School of Commerce in 1936, he worked as a bookkeeper in Fort Plain.
From 1941-1945, he served in the U.S. Army in the Asian Pacific Theater as a supply tech engineer.
He received the following medals - American Defense Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
While in the service he married Cora Green on June 18, 1942, in the West Oneonta Baptist Church.
After his discharge from the Army he worked for the Delaware and Hudson Railway. In 1978 he retired after 32 years of service.
After retirement from the railroad, Harold, learned how to use a computer and a digital camera. He enjoyed compiling genealogies, creating graphics and printing out pictures.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence Barney and William Everett Barney Robinson.
He was also predeceased by a son, Charles H. Barney, on July 27, 1981.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cora; a daughter and son-in-law, Esther L. and Robert J. Reynolds of Otego; a granddaughter and her husband, Mary E. (Reynolds) and John Yim of North Tonawanda; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Yim.
Friends are invited to meet with the family in the Sessions Room at the West Oneonta Baptist Church from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002.
The funeral will be in the main sanctuary of the West Oneonta Baptist Church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, with the Rev. John Dougherty and the Rev. Tim Thurber co-officiating.
A service of committal and burial will follow in the West Oneonta Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., or the West Oneonta Fire Department.
