Elena Desserich was diagnosed shortly before her sixth birthday with a rare and incurable form of brain cancer.
Elena loved to draw, and her artwork became highly sought after by members of the community who heard about the girl's struggle.
"The most common phrase that people tell me is, ‘You don't know me, but,' and they hear about Elena's story, and it's quite overwhelming," said her father, Keith Desserich.
Her family started a fund called "The Cure Starts Now," and thousands of dollars later, the research effort to combat diffuse brainstem glioma has won new supporters.
The condition affects mostly children, and nine of every 10 people who are diagnosed live no longer than 18 months.
The public outpouring of love and support has helped Elena's family get through a difficult time, Desserich said.
"When we're having a hard time and the only thing we can go through is just memories of it, you know, you walk around the house and it's just the hardest place to be right now," he said.
The family plans a memorial service, a swim-a-thon and walk-a-thon in Elena's name.
