Laura Bonnie Imes was born in Montrose, Colorado on St. Patrick's Day, 1889. Laura attended a one room schoolhouse that her Father helped build. After graduating from 8th grade, Laura moved to Telluride, CO so she could attend high school. Laura was an excellent student and received scholarships when she graduated from high school. Laura attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado and graduated with a BA degree in English in 1928 and a Master's degree in Political Science in 1933. After graduating from college, Laura began teaching in Austin, CO. where she was known as a dedicated teacher. Laura later became Principal of the Austin school.
Laura moved to Glendale, AZ where her brother, Isaac Imes lived. Laura taught second grade in the Glendale School District for many years. Laura enjoyed teaching her young students and spent many hours beyond the regular school day helping students with their class work.
Laura, who was often called "Aunt Laura" by family members, loved flowers and planted many different kinds of flowers in her garden. A row of peach trees with peppermint striped blossoms that grew along one side of her property brought many comments and attention when they were covered with beautiful flowers in the spring.
After mandatory age retirement from the Glendale School System in 1955, Laura began teaching in Superior, AZ and continued to teach in Superior for several years. Superior is a small mining town in Arizona, about a two hour drive from Phoenix. Laura, who never drove a car, would take a Greyhound bus to Superior every Sunday afternoon, teach grade school during the week, and then return to Glendale and her home on Friday afternoon. Aunt Laura's pay for the school year in 1955 was $3,500.00 plus $150.00 base pay and $250.00 for past experience.
Laura was a very kind and generous person who loved her family and would help others if they were in need. Aunt Laura is remembered for the dedicated, hardworking person that she was, a person who lived by "The Golden Rule", and her love of beautiful flowers and flower gardens.
