George Burgess is one of the 58 killed in the explosion and fire at the R. B. Grover Shoe Factory on March 20, 1905. At the time of the explosion (about 7:50am) there were approximately 400 employees in the four-story building located on the corner of Calmar and Main Streets in the Campello district of Brockton, Mass. An additional 150 were injured as the building was leveled following a steam boiler explosion. The unidentified remains of 36 victims were buried three days later at Brockton's Melrose Cemetery. The large monument has all of the 58 names engraved on it.
