John was the sixth child (second son) of Asaph and Hannah [Wood] Pearl, born in Vermont, moved to New York after his mother's death in 1814, and then moved to Michigan in 1838 with his first cousin, Stephen Graham, whose daughter Theodosia he married in New York. John was a successful farmer in Calhoun County, and father of four daughters. Although according to local biographies he died in 1868, he was not buried at Oakridge until 1891, obviously moved from another burial site unknown.
