John was the son of John Leverton and his wife, Mary Jane Thomas. His father served in Hood's Brigade in the Confederate States Army. His mother was the daughter of Judge John C. Thomas.
John married Fredericka "Ricky" Augusta Carolina Telschow on 16 September 1903 in Harris County, Texas.
As a young man, John worked for Southern Pacific Lines, eventually becoming an accountant in the freight office.
In 1922 he left the railroad and began working for American National Insurance, where he worked for 25 years.
John and Ricky resided in the Heights where they raised their seven children. The family attended Baptist Temple, where John served as a Deacon and was very active in church activities. In 1933, he served as Superintendent of Sunday School.
