Captain John Henry Cates, son of the founder of the North Vancouver tugboat firm of C.H. Cates & Sons Ltd. is dead at the age of 90. His death occurred in Lions Gate Hospital on Oct 26, 1986. Funeral service was held at St Agnes Anglican Church in North Vancouver. Capt. Cates served in the Royal Navy during WWI. He worked for more than 50 years in the family business at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, seeing it grow from a one-tug outfit into a vigorous shipberthing firm with a staff of 95. Capt. Cates served for 7 years (1945-1952) in the B.C. Legislature as a member of the Coalition Party. For 3 of those years he served as minister of labor. His father, Capt. Charles Henry Cates, had hauled stone from the quarries at Gibsons and Squamish to help in the rebuilding of Vancouver after the great fire (June 13, 1886). Later he built the first wharf on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. In 1913 he formed a new towing company, first known as C.H. Cates and the becoming C.H. Cates & Sons in 1921. John Henry Cates joined the firm in that year after serving in the Canadian Merchant Marine. His wife Carrie, who died in 1977, was the first woman mayor of North Vancouver. John Henry Cates was born in Vancouver on Jul 13, 1896. He and the former Carrie Matilda Sweeten were married in North Vancouver on Jun 25, 1927. He is survived by 4 daughters, 2 sisters, 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
