Carl was the youngest child born to Fred and Elise Vollmer. He was born Apr 25, 1889 in Idelwood, Allegheny, PA. (City near Pittsburgh).
Carl married Lillian E. Smink in 1909 at the age of 20. They had four children: Carl George Jr., Frederick James, Virginia, and Ruth.
Carl worked as a Master Brewer for the Pittsburgh Brewing Co. his entire life. Even during prohibition, when the Brewery was transformed into the Tech Food Products Co--selling products such as ice cream--Carl was a supervisor. He resumed his title as Master Brewer after prohibition when the building, once again, was back as a brewery. Iron City Beer is the most well know product of this brewery. It is still made today.
Carl enjoyed the outdoors-something he shared with his father. He liked boating, fishing, hunting, and gardening. When his beloved wife, Lillian, had a stroke at a young age, he woke each day and helped her dress, cleanse, and do household chores. He did all this while working long hours at the Brewery.
Carl was my Great Grandfather. I remember him as always smiling, telling stories, and being a "kidder". He enjoyed having his family around.
Grandpa Carl died August 29, 1975, at the age of 86. He had bladder cancer. The day he died he was surrounded by family. He is greatly loved and missed.
