William John "Bill" Barry is a son of Henry and Anna (Gebauer) Barry. Bill received his elementary education at Hillside School south of Akron. He moved with the family in 1932 to Battle Creek, Nebraska, where he worked for various farmers. In 1937, he moved back to Colorado.
Bill was working at the Vance Hatchery in Akron when he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He served briefly in North Africa before being assigned to the forces making an assault on Italy at Anzio. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received there and was discharged in 1944.
In 1947 he married Doris Carter Sundling who preceded him in death in 2004 after 56 years of marriage.
Bill was elected and served as the Washington County assessor from 1947 to 1952. In 1952 he went to work for Max Waxman at his store in Akron. Bill and his brother-in-law, Raymond Alt, purchased an interest in the Waxman store which operated under the name B. W. & A, Inc. Later, Mr. Waxman's remaining interest was purchased and a second store called the Budget Center was opened in Yuma. After several years the Yuma store was closed and Bill became the sole proprietor of Bill's Carpet and Furniture in Akron until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of the Akron Church of Christ where he served as treasurer, bible class teacher, and often preached in the absence of the regular minister.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Fred, Louis, and Joe.
