BUHL — Alma Lois Bailey, 94, a resident of Meridian, Idaho, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, in Gooding, Idaho.

Lois was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Buhl, Idaho, the daughter of Thomas L. and Bertie Lee McBroom. She was raised and educated in Buhl, graduating from Buhl High School in 1936.

She married Jordan Everett Cox on Oct. 26, 1936, in Burley, ID. The two high school sweethearts had eloped and when they announced to their parents what they had done, neither of their mothers was thrilled. The couple lived in Buhl, where Everett barbered and Lois took care of their home and two sons. She was an excellent cook and fine seamstress.

World War II came and Everett left Lois and the boys to serve in the Army Air Corps. Lois kept the home fires burning like so many other young wives and mothers of that era. When the war was over, things had changed and a separation and divorce followed.

After those events, she married John P. Bailey Jr., who was in the potato business. Initially, they made their first home in Twin Falls, Idaho, and then moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. The potato business involved travel to Chicago, New York City and other eastern cities, but they always returned to Idaho.

Lois took up the game of golf and became quite good at it. During her active years at the game, she dropped three holes-in-one, an accomplishment that she found very satisfying. She honed her sewing skills and, among other things, made wedding dresses for several of her granddaughters. When John retired from the potato business, they settled in Bakersfield, CA, where they managed apartments. John's health began to fail and he passed away in February 1989.

Lois then returned to Idaho and settled in Boise to be near her sister, Christine. She remained active on the golf course and at the sewing machine until failing eyesight and her general health began to intervene. She took great joy in the time she could spend with her sister; her niece, Carolyn; her two sons, Gary and Jan; and her grandchildren. In her advancing years, her short-term memory began to recede, but she never failed to recognize those who were closest to her.

A fall and a broken hip, followed by necessary surgery, led to a rapid decline in her health. She passed away peacefully and without signs of pain and stress.

She is survived by her two sons, Gary Cox, of Wendell, and Jan Cox, of Boise; one stepdaughter, Thayre; 14 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all her siblings; her husband, John P. Bailey; and one stepdaughter, Brenda.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the LDS meetinghouse at 501 Main St. in Buhl, Idaho, with her son, Bishop Jan G. Cox conducting. Burial will follow at the West End Cemetery in Buhl. Family members and friends may call from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the LDS Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Tee program which teaches core values to elementary school age youth.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Demaray Funeral Service, Wendell Chapel.
