Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Joseph Gourneau White Weasel, 73, Belcourt, was held Tuesday, June 17, 2003 in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, with Father Bob Cronin officiating. Burial was in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt. He passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in the Belcourt Hospital, Belcourt, ND.

Casket bearers were Frank Poitra, Louie Erdrich, Ralph Erdrich, Joey Gourneau, Blaine Gourneau, Danny Goedders and Terry Gourneau.

Charles was born to Patrick "Aun nish e naubay" and Mary (LeFavor) Gourneau on May 1, 1930 in Belcourt, ND.

Charles was raised on the family farm and completed his early education in Belcourt. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and earned higher education degrees from the Wahpeton School of Science, North Dakota State University and Mayville State College.

Charlie worked for many years in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area before returning to the Turtle Mountains in the late 1960s. Locally he worked for Bulova Portia Construction and retired after many years with Turtle Mountain Community College.

He was active in the church, local education programs and was politically active in tribal issues. He was a Tribal Historian, Traditional Dancer and Indian Rights Activist.

Charlie married Joyce Kathleen Poitra. They had three children. He later married Cheryl St. Clair and had a daughter.

Wabigingoss (white weasel) enjoyed historical research, attending and dancing at Pow Wows, fishing for nothern pike in the Mouse River, playing the one-armed bandits at the casinos, the company of his family and especially time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is well remembered for a special project: the restoration of the 1890 Log House at the family home site. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Charlie is survived by daughters: Georgia Ann "JoJo" of Minneapolis, MN and Sharla of Belcourt; Sons: Marlin of Belcourt and Chris of Minneapolis; sisters: Rita Erdrich of Wahpeton, Gladys Poitra of Belcourt, Madonna Owen of Spokane, WA, Dolores Manson of Valley City, and Roberta Morin of Belcourt; brothers: Dwight of Rochester, MN, Howard of Granada Hills, CA, Terry of Bismarck, and nime grandchildren: Asa, Danny, Deanna, Rachel, Joey, Blaine, Angela, Tanikka and Demitri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Mary; wife, Joyce; and brothers: Robert and Kenneth.
