~Julius Posatale Barlowe (aka Barlow)~

Julius Posatale Barlowe was born November 26, 1866 and was the son of Calvin Barlow and Loretta “Ritta” Bentley. He told his children that he was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and his death certificate states place of birth as Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Julius married Temperance Cordelia “Tempie” McClurd, daughter of James W. McClurd and Mary Jane (Presswood/aka Preswood/Prestwood ) McClurd, about 1888.

Julius and Tempie settled near the first old McClurd home which was near the Watauga River and in the Grandfather Community of Watauga County, North Carolina. Julius and Tempie lived in this same house until their deaths.

They had 9 children: 8 sons, Charlie, Raleigh, Oren, Vernie, Calvin, Paul, Stanley and Manley, and 1 daughter, Maude “Maudie.” One son, Calvin, died as an infant. Julius and Tempie also reared their grandson, Grady Barlow, after the death of Grady’s father, Charlie.

Julius was a farmer, sawmill owner, store operator, and corn mill owner. He was a member of the Watauga Baptist Church.

In his later years, Julius was crippled by rheumatism and had to walk with crutches.

Julius died November 29, 1951 at age 85. He died at Banner Elk, Watauga County, North Carolina and is buried in the Jestes Cemetery in Watauga County, North Carolina.
