While searching for my quadruple great grandfather (Stephen Cannon) who is buried in Solon, Iowa, I ran into the graves of William Cannon & his wife Julia A (Pratt) Cannon Whipple. (Whipple because she married again after William died.)

My first thought was that perhaps they were related to each other. There is a website owned by Marilou West Ficklin whose ancestor John West) platted the town of Solon, Iowa. In this website, she mentions William Cannon as one of the early settlers in Solon, Big Grove Township, Johnson County, Iowa, USA. I would recommend anybody interested in Solon, Iowa to check out her website:

Information about William Cannon can be found at the following website: (Once you get there, you have to search for the word Cannon.)

The only thing in error is that the LDS records currently have him from Blandford, MA (where my ancestors were from). However, it is clear from a rubbing of his headstone that it states he was born in Salem, MA -- not Blandford.

William D Cannon's family in the 1850 census

I hope if there are living descendants who have done genealogy on their family that they can fill in more about Williams parentage.

For the evolution of William's memorial, thanks go to:
1) K L Bonnett for creating the memorial.
2) Marilou for having the only online info about William;
3) LeAnn who went out of her way to help me trace down Williams's family. A special thanks goes to her for all the emails with what she could find out about William. She also braved the cold to take photos of all the Cannon graves as well as a rubbing to verify that Williams birth was in Salem -- not Blandford, MA. Her ancestors may not have been from Solon, IA, but with the enthusiasm she has for her community she should be made an honorary daughter of Solon, IA. If only every town had a LeAnn, genealogy would be so much easier.
