Arthur passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011. He was 88 years old.
Born in Kiefer, OK on November 13, 1922 to Arthur Allen and Rosa Harrison (Kingston) Axley, Arthur grew up and received his education in Bixby. Following his high school years he joined the Army, serving in the 2nd Infantry and Company A, 1301 Engineer Regiment. He served his country during WWII by participating in four major theater campaigns. Upon discharge he returned to his home in Bixby.
Art and Armintie Tindle married on April 25th, 1959 in a Mount Vernon, IL ceremony so they could be near her parents. This marriage resulted in a family of five children. They made their first home in Tulsa where Art worked as a supervisor for a local milk company. In 1962 they purchased a farm west of Chelsea to raise their family. In 1974 they left the farm and made a new home in Cassville, MO where they owned and operated a funeral home for the next 17 years. Art later purchased some land and built an auditorium, turning it into the location for a country music show and later added a buffet style restaurant. He was happiest getting acquainted with people. He love making friend and sharing stories.
In 1997, after having sold both the funeral home and the auditorium and restaurant, they Axleys returned to Oklahoma purchasing an acreage and home near Big Cabin, just outside of Chelsea. Since Art loved working, they again returned to the cattle business. Through much of his lifetime, he gave himself not only to his work efforts but also to his community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was also involved with the Rotary and other service organizations.
Though work and community were important, his priority was his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Those family members who survive are his wife, Armintie of their home near Big Cabin; four of his five children, son Gary Lee Axley and wife, Debbie of Arkansas, daughters Barbara Fox of Claremore, Roberta Draeger and husband, Gary and Judy Robertson, all of Chelsea; twelve grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Edith Fann of Oregon and several nieces and nephews. Art was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Clydia Leroi Needham, one brother, Cecil Axley and two sisters, Sarah Tharp and Jo Dean Wheeler.
Friends and family who wish to honor Art's memory with memorial gifts may contribute to either the Corinth Baptist Church, P. O. Box 513, Cassville, MO 65625 or the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #383 A.F.&A.M., 1704 Main Street, Cassville, MO 65625
