Mr. Carl Edward Colwell, 85, of 206 Colwell Lane, Clinton, died Thursday at Sampson Regional Medical Center, Clinton, NC.

Mr. Colwell, born in Sampson County, was the son of the late Carl Herring Colwell and Edna King Colwell. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Colwell. He retired as a postal superintendent of the Clinton Post Office. He was a graduate of the Turkey High School, a World War II veteran of the US Army, having served with the 78th Infantry Division in Germany and was recalled to service during the Korean War. He was a member and deacon at New Hope Baptist Church and a former member, deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Rowan Baptist Church. He served as a former
chairman of the Clinton-Sampson Recreation Commission and a former Little League Baseball Coach.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois Matthis Best Colwell, three children, Richard David Colwell and wife Beverly of Richmond Hill, GA; Judy Lynne Colwell of Raleigh, two grandchildren, Jessica and Sam Colwell of Richmond Hill, GA; one great grandchild, Nolan Colwell of Richmond Hill, GA; a brother, James H. Colwell and wife Doris of Turkey.

The family recieved friends at the home.

The funeral services were held at 2pm, Monday, December 27, at New Hope Baptist Church in Turkey with the Rev. Ernest Mason and the Rev. E. C. Mattocks officiating.

Burial was made in the Matthis Cemetery, Sampson County, NC.
