Lee David Groves was born on September 15, 1915, near Plato, Texas County, Missouri, to Claud and Addie (Cook) Groves. Lee attended Blackjack School in his childhood and was a faithful member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church. He lived his entire life on the farm where he was born, eventually (with his brother and partner, Jewell), winning awards as the largest producer of Angus beef cattle in Missouri.

At age 51 Lee, a longtime bachelor, married Golda Oleta Willis Powell on August 20, 1967. In addition to farming, Lee and Golda visited every state and capitol in the continental U.S. and visited and photographed every courthouse in the state of Missouri. They shared 38 years together before her death in 2005.

Lee died on February 3, 2013, in Richland, Missouri, at the age of 97. He is survived by his brother, Jewell Groves and his wife Betty; one niece, Deborah McGuire and her husband Jim; one nephew, Donald Groves and his wife Carolyn, all of the Plato area; plus many step-children and step-grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
