Hugh Hamiter Lovelady Sr, 76, of Vienna died March 12, 2001 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was born December 27, 1924 in Hopewell, Va. a son of Arthur T. and Tessie L.B. Lovelady. He had been a resident of Vienna since 1959. He was a graduate of Hopewell High School and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He was retired from E.I. DuPont DeNemours and Company with service in excess of 44 years. His career included various engineering management positions at the Richmond, Va, Spruance Film Plant Location, Savannah River Hydrogen Bomb Plant at Aiken, S.C. and the local Washington Works. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, honorably discharged, having served n World War II with Third United States Army, 26th Infantry Division, Company E, 101st Infantry Regiment and was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal, Germany; the Bronze Star Medal for ground combat against an armed enemy of the U.S; Combat Infantryman Badge; European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Battle Stars for the Rhineland and Central Europe; Good Conduct Europe; and World War II Victory Medal. He had been a member of the Parkersburg Moose Lodge, Marietta Post 64, American Legion and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dorothy L.D. Lovelady; one daughter, Deborah D.L. Phillips of Vienna; one son and daughter-in-law, Hugh H. Jr and Jan E.W. Lovelady of Phoenix, Ariz; one grandaughter, Amber Rae Phillips Mace and her husband Kevin of Blacksburg, Va, married March 10, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his son, Craig Lamar Lovelady; and one brother, Walter Lamar Lovelady Sr.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at J.T. Morriss & Sons Funeral Home, Hopewell, Va. Burial in the family plot at Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, Va. Visitation is from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, and from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna.
