John Wiley Davis, 58, 1116 Wise St., retired engineer for the Norfolk & Western Railway, died at 4:55 a.m. yesterday at McGuire General Hospital, Richmond, after an illness of four years. Born in Pamplin, Appomattox County, May 5, 1893, he was the son of the late Hunter H. and Betty Webber Davis. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Trinity Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railway Engineers. He was employed 37 years by the railroad. Survivors include his wife, the former Lockie Dinkins; a son, J. W. Davis, Jr., of Lynchburg; seven daughters, Mrs. S. P. Cheatham, Jr., Mrs. Thomas Rush, Mrs. Arthur Lipscomb, Jacquelyn and Gwendolyn Davis all of Lynchburg, Mrs. Lester Simon of Norfolk, and Mrs. Robert A. Manning of Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren; seven brothers, Henry and James Davis of Pamplin; Ernest Davis of Cumberland County; Walker and Russell Davis of Norfolk; Frank Davis of Hampton Roads and F. R. Davis of Crewe; five sisters, Mrs. W. F. Pugh of Burkville, Mrs. W. E. Oaks of Wallsville, Mrs. Harry Carter and Mrs. Arthur Davis of Norfolk and Mrs. S. P. Price of Suffolk. The remains will be at his home, 1116 Wise St., until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when they will be carried to Trinity Methodist Church for funeral services at 11 a.m.. Burial will be in Fort Hill Burial Park.
