Dr. Paul Kiser Candler, 83, a retired general practitioner, died June 23, 1990, in a hospital.
A native of Cleveland, Va., he attended Emory and Henry College and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He served his internship and surgical residency at Norfolk General Hospital. He joined the Army medical corps in 1941, served as a regimental surgeon in England, France and Germany, and was discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant colonel.
Dr. Candler was a general practitioner in Warrenton from 1946 to 1964. He served a term as chief of staff at Fauquier Hospital and was chairman of the Fauquier County Arthritis Foundation. He was a staff member of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem for 10 years until his retirement in 1973.
He was a member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, Medical Society of Virginia, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association and Fauquier County Medical Society. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Khedive Temple in Roanoke, Disabled American Veterans and Phi Chi Medical Fraternity.
He was the widower of
Leah Estelle Haynie Candler.
Survivors include two sons, William H. Candler of Virginia Beach and Paul T. Candler of Richmond; five stepsisters, Clarice C. Estes and Madge C. Greer, both of Abingdon, Martha C. Gilliam of Wise, Mary C. Whitesell of Purcellville and Lois C. Hill of Emory; a brother, - Grady Candler of Lebanon, Va. ; - and five grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted at noon today in Roseland Cemetery, Reedville, by the Rev. Joseph T. Carson III. Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Heathsville, is handling arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
