Married Frances Hardy in May 1941.
Married Lois Schuette July 19, 1963 at New Madrid, Missouri.

Mr. Mason and his wife were visiting friends in St. Louis when he became ill and died.

Mr. Mason devoted more than 42 years to music education in Missouri and came to SEMO in 1957 from Jackson where he had served as director of music for the public schools there.

Shortly after joining the university faculty, he originated the now well known concept of the "marching marquee." the idea for the moving formation of words, which has been adopted by numerous bands in the nation, came to Mr. Mason when he saw lighted letters moving across an advertising display in a Cape Girardeau jewelry store.

During his tenure with the Golden Eagles, it also claimed more national television time that any other band in the country from 1957 to 1975. From 1957 until his retirement, more than 1, 150 members have marched with the top notch band.

Numerous honors were accorded Mr. Mason for his work with the Golden Eagles. He was parade marshal for the 1975 SEMO Homecoming Parade.

After earning his teaching degrees, Mr. Mason also did graduate work at Northwestern University and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He began his career in schools at Mendon, Triplett, Sumner and LaGrange, coming to Riverview Gardens in St. Louis in 1936.

He also directed the Jackson Municipal Band and Choral Club, and in 1944 started a band festival which led to formation of the Southeast Missouri High School Band Association in 1945. Mr. Mason served as president of that group in 1946 and in 1952 served as president of the Missouri Music Educators Association.

Mr. Mason was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club.
