Dtr of Robert Oliver Blair & Elsie Mae (Burgess) Blair. Married Rev. Kenneth Brethouwer Jun 2, 1964.
Sister of Dr. Charles E. Blair, founder of Calvary Temple in Denver Colorado.
After graduating from high school in Enid, Oklahoma, she taught for one year at a Christian elementary school.
In 1938, she answered God's call on her life and began preaching in schoolhouses in Oklahoma and Arkansas. She was soon joined by Rhoda Freeman and they traveled throughout the West and Midwest evangelizing. Norma Garland joined them not too long after to form the Blair Evangelistic Trio.
Bertha Mae was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1942.
After Rhoda married in 1949, Bertha Mae and Norma continued ministering in the West and in Alaska and Hawaii. When Norma married in 1959, Bertha Mae returned to Hawaii as a missionary and served as Christian Education Director for an Assembly of God Church in Aeia, Hawaii.
In 1964, Bertha Mae married a widowed minister, Kenneth Brethouwer, and became mother to his five girls. Together they continued his ministry of pastoring the congregation at Canyon Road Assembly of God in Ogden, Utah.
During their tenure, they built a new church in Ogden and helped with the building of Rock Canyon Assembly of God Church in Provo.
In 1973, Kenneth and Bertha Mae flew to Africa where he supervised a building project and she taught in the Bible School. Her instruction was translated into Swahili by a native speaker.
In 1979, the Brethouwers retired in Provo, where they continued to be active in the Rock Canyon Worship Center.
Bertha Mae Brethouwer is survived by her five daughters: Charlotte Crout, Greenville, SC; Carol Needham, Vista, CA; Mary Mench, Kaneohe, Kaneohe, HI; Marla Wages, Springfield, OR; Kerry Conrad, Ogden, UT; two brothers, Charles Blair, Denver, CO; and Robert Blair, Gilbert, AZ; 22 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two nieces, and four nephews.
