JOHNSON, Harold E.

A Marine of the Carsons Raiders during WWII, who received 2 purple hearts and many other combat awards, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2012 at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. Harold was born on February 28, 1924 in Towanda, PA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruby Hovland Johnson; and his parents, Cornelius and Bertha Johnson; as well as two brothers, Louis and Irvin Paul; and a sister, Susie Wilcox. Harold is survived by his sister, Marion; and his beloved children, Carol (Richard), Ronald (Joann), Dorleen (Eddie) and Vicki(Richard). Harold was the proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. Harold was a retired engineer at Smith Corona in Cortland, NY, with a lifelong interest in electronics. An avid hunter and fisherman, he also handcrafted many items for his family in his workshop. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and watching football and baseball. He often cooked for family and friends and shared his spaghetti recipe and cashew bars. Harold was a past Master of the Breesport Masonic Lodge Post #725, as well as a lifetime member of the Horseheads Elks Post #2297and the Marine Corp League. For several years, he was very active in the Horseheads Senior Citizens Group. He was also a longtime member (60 years) of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Elmira. The family gives special thanks to Debbie Johnson and his dear friends, John Elliot and Bob Rafferty. Woodbrook Assisted Living provided Harold with a second home in his final years and appreciation is expressed to Lori Sweeney, Amy, Tammy and the other staff members. Family and friends are invited to call Tuesday, September 18, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, at 1 p.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Krista Mendoza celebrating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors, Bethany Lutheran Church or Southern Tier Hospice.
