Donald Alvah O'Neil, 90, of La Grande, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at Grande Ronde Hospital.
A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on Gekeler Lane with Bishop Ivan Hibbert officiating. Dedication of the grave and burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 tonight or from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley or from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Stake Center.
Mr. O'Neil was born March 13, 1907, in Vernal, Utah, to Alvah and Minetta Hards O'Neil. He moved to La Grande in 1926. He married Maria Bauer on April 3, 1958, in the Salt Lake Temple.
He served with the Army in the Railroad Battalion in India during World War ll.
After his honorable discharge, he returned to La Grande and worked as a lumber grader for Boise Cascade until his retirement in 1972.
He was a lifetime member of the LDS Church, and was branch president of the Elgin Ward, stake missionary and counselor to the bishopric.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and traveling.
Besides his wife, Marie, of La Grande, he is survived by his sister, Wilda Shenfield of La Grande, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and 41 nieces and nephews.
His son, Wilford O'Neil, died earlier, as did three brothers, Glade, Bert and Hugh, and four sisters, Jen, Delphia, Bessie and Lois.
