New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
George Warde Smith was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 23, 1887 and died on February 28, 1919. According to his military record he died on board the SS Rochambeau. Coincidentally his death date is listed as the same day the shipped docked in New York City and he died of influenza. Presumably it was the same influenza that claimed the lives of so many in the outbreak during the war. He enlisted in 1916 and was still in the military when he died.
He was the biological father of Helen Elizabeth Mowerson, Find a Grave # 33794651, who was born on July 4, 1909 and adopted by the Mowerson family in 1910.
He married Gabrielle Jean de Lattaignant on October 1, 1915 in New York City. She was born in France,or perhaps Belgium,
(in some reords).
His father was Charles W. Smith, born in New Jersey and whose birthdate is unknown, but who died sometime before 1894 when his widow remarried.
George is buried with his mother Jessie M. Pettit
stands among the rest,
forgotten and forlorn.
Your name and date are chiseled out,
on slate or old limestone,
it reaches out to all who care,
itís not to late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist,
you died before I was born.
Yet, each of us are cells of you,
of flesh and blood and bone.
Our heart contracts and beats a pulse,
entirely not our own.
Dear George, the place you filled
so many years ago,
spread out among the ones you left,
who would have loved you so.
I know that you lived and loved,
but I wonder if you knew,
someday I would find this spot,
and come to visit you.
