Wayne spent most of his life in the North Valentine, Nebraska area where he resided until the time of his death. Wayne always loved working with horses and entered his first rodeo in the mid-50's. In 1957 he began to rodeo more frequently, joining the South Dakota Rodeo Association in 1959, and was the steer wrestling champion that same year. That was the beginning of a long history of championships in the association as well as others. Wayne married his first wife, Marilyn, and together they had two children, Scott and Linda. The two were later divorced, and on June 15, 1960, he married Phyllis Schlemme.
Wayne died on March 6, 1995 at Rapid City, South Dakota, from cancer, at the age of 58. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Harvey Lee, Claude Edward and Orval John Cornish.
