Odessa Record: Nov 4, 1976: Reuben Janke was a native of the state "Reuben Janke, the son of Gotthilf Janke and his wife, Catherine Rompel Janke, was born Oct 24, 1909 in Walla Walla. He received his formal education in the rural schools south of Odessa. On Sept 1, 1931 he was married to Edna Heimbigner. The celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on Sept 1, 1976. Three children were born to this union: Merle, Allen and Delila. Janke had been an employee of the Odessa Union Warehouse Co-op for 36 years. Following an extended illness, he died at the local hospital on Oct 25, 1976. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jake, Emanuel and Roscoe Janke; one sister, Pauline Janke; and by one step-brother, Johnny Swent. He is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons: Merle, Odessa, and Allen, Ephrata; one daughter, DeLila Huff, Tacoma; one sister, Frieda Roark, Coos Bay, Oregon; one half sister, Martha Aldridge, Spokane; two step-brothers: Philip Swent and Henry Swent, Endicott; four step sisters: Mary Smick and Leah Gaffney, Spokane, Katie Lesser, Endicott, and Ryle Horst, Colville; 9 grandchildren; one great grandchild. Funeral services were held on October 28 from Christ Lutheran Church, Rev Daniel Cronrath officiating. Organist for the service was Mrs Ron Frederick. Mrs Gerald Schafer was soloist. Hymns sung were "Be Still My Soul" and "Amazing Grace". Casketbearers for the service were Winston Weber, Eldon Heimbigner, Hank Reihs, Ros Reiman, J P Luiten, Dan Gettman and Kenneth Hofstrand. Interment was in the Odessa Cemetery, Strates in charge."
