He was next to the youngest of the 6 children (5 sons and 1 daughter) of William Alexander Atnip and Nancy Frances Luna Atnip Gibbs. He was named for his mother's brother Peter Luna. His father died when he was just 6. His mother remarried a John Gibbs, they were living in Smithville, TN, when the War commenced. He enlisted in the 16th Tennessee Infantry 21 May 1861 at Camp Harris along with brothers Elisha, Benjamin, and John. His oldest brother, Richard, also lost his life during the war - at Camp Morton Prison Camp in Indianapolis, where he is buried, at Crown Hill Cem. On May 23, 1863, his mother filed for the pay that was due him.
