Funeral Services For W.P. McPherson
Services were held at the Hopewell church, six miles south of Fort Cobb at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon for W.P. McPherson, state pioneer, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Graham in Carnegie early Tuesday. Remarkably active in spite of his 81 years, he had been in failing health only a few months and was not in a serious condition until a few days before he died.
William Pyatt McPherson was born December 6, 1855 in Rhea Springs, Tenn. and died May 11, 1937 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 25 days. He was married to Sarah Anice Powell November 28, 1883 and to them ten children were born, two of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. McPherson passed away October 21, 1920.
Mr. McPherson was a member of a large family that pioneered in Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma. He with his family came from Tennessee to Wayne, Indian Territory in January, 1903 and a few years later moved to the Fort Cobb and Carnegie communities. He spent the past few years with his daughters, Mrs. J.E. Horn and Mrs. Carl Graham in Carnegie.
Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Horn and Mrs. Graham of Carnegie; his six sons, James and Lawrence McPherson of Carnegie; John, Earl and William McPherson of Fort Cobb, and Carl McPherson of Laferia, Texas. Also 20 grandchildren and two great grand children and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. McPherson was a Mason and special services at the grave were under the auspices of the Fort Cobb lodge, with Carnegie members assisting. The Pitcher Funeral Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
