Girl, 7, Dies, County Toll Jumps to 13
Shirley Ann Baldwin, 7 year old daughter of Glenn and Ruth Baldwin, 1320 Alexandria Road, became the thirteenth Madison County person killed in traffic accidents in 1960 Sunday afternoon following a bicycle-automobile collision.
The accident occurred on Ferguson Road about ¼ mile west of Indiana 9 according to Deputy Sheriff Mel Hornbeck who investigated.
Deputy Hornbeck stated following his investigation that Shirley Ann had been riding east on Ferguson Road on a bicycle with her cousin, Richard Lee McClead, 9. Nearing the McClead home, Richard turned the bicycle south (right) into the path of a vehicle driven by Ross Otis Brackett, 25, of 1106 Washington St., Alexandria.
In the collision which ensued, Shirley Ann was thrown 30 to 40 feet and Richard six to eight feet from the point of impact.
Both children were taken to St. John's Hospital where Shirley died. Coroner Fred Hiday reported death was due to brain hemorrhage and Deputy Hornbeck added that injuries included scalp lacerations and internal damage.
Richard sustained a compound fracture of the right leg, two breaks below the knee and one above, and is still confined to the hospital.
Richard's sister, Karen Sue, was also riding her bicycle at the time of the accident, but reportedly was 200 to 300 feet ahead of Richard and Shirley Ann, the deputy said. She had turned and looked back at the pair just prior to the accident, but did not see the actual collision when it occurred, he said.
Shirley and her mother had been visiting the Keith McClead home during the afternoon.
The little girl was in the second grade at Lindberg School and was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church.
The body was taken to the Sells and Rowe Funeral Home where friends are being received. Services are to be held at the funeral home tomorrow at 10 a.m. with Rev. Vard VanBriggle officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.
Surviving besides the parents are a sister, Janet Pettigrew and nine brothers, Michael J. Baldwin, Roy Stephens, and Robert, Farrell, Jimmy, Jackie, Philbert, Gilbert, and Max Pettigrew.
