ABANDON HOPE FOR 3 IN OCEAN
The Coast Guard has abandoned hope for three crewman aboard the fishing boat Dorothy R. which capsized and sank in the Catalina Channel.
Missing and dead are presumed dead are Bill Smith, 19 of 2258 Magnolia Ave; Joseph O and Clifford Barlow, brothers from Fullerton.
Three other crew members were rescued, numb from exposure and shock, after drifting for hours in chilly, black waters.
Smith's father, Captain William C. Smith, a former Navy officer, said he believes the three men were trapped in the pilothouse when the boat capsized.
The Dorothy R. spent Thursday night at San Clemente Island. Friday, with seas rising and gale warnings crackling on the radio, the Dorothy R. turned for home. Her diesels pounding, she turned the lee end of Catalina Island, and steered almost due north for San Pedro. She was riding high in the water for lack of fish, and with no ballast in her hold. Heavy seas were pounding her port bow.
At 12:15am Saturday, a huge swell laid the Dorothy R. over. Another swell caught her as she leaned and she capsized. Skipper Russell Farnell, 45, of Westminster, was thrown clear and sonn grabbed a floating hatch cover.
Paul J Anderson, 47, of 2889 Adriatic Ave, and Robert Parks of Redondo Beach, were saved because Anderson had a knife in his pocket. He cut cork floats from a huge lamparanet and tied them about himself and Anderson. A tug picked up Farnell. A Navy oiler found Anderson and Parks.
"The Coast Guard dad a magnificent job of searching," Capt. Smith said. "I wish you'd stress that. They did all they could and more."
