Joel R. Blankenship was born July 20, 1850, in Russell Co. Kentucky. He was united in marriage to Mary J. Shockley Jan. 15, 1874. To this union were born nine children, four of them having preceded him to the spirit world. He leaves to mourn their loss an aged companion, five children, twenty grandchildren, one brother, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Uncle Joe, as he was commonly called, departed this life Feb 20, being at the time of his death 67 years and 7 months old. Uncle Joe was honorable and well respected by all who knew him. He was devoted to his family and home, but when we call to mind the statement of Jobe, "Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble," we are made to realize the truth of the statement.
Uncle Joe had the care of an afflicted son for the past eight years. His wife told me that during the eight years they never knew what it was to lie down and sleep all night. On the 3rd of last November Uncle Joe was thrown from a horse which resulted in a broken limb besides other injuries. Since that time he has been confined to his bed almost all the time and just as he began to think he could be up he was taken seriously ill with pneumonia which resulted in his death. He endured his suffering very patiently and without a murmur.
The funeral services were conducted by the writer from the Baptist Church at Hickory Point Feb. 22 in the midst of a large and sorrowing audience, after which all that was mortal of Uncle Joe was laid to rest In the Hickory Point Cemetery. May God bless the sorrowing ones. I assure you, you have our sympathy and prayers. We trust their loss has been his eternal gain in heaven where all is love, peace and Joy.
