PALM COAST, FLA./ST. ALBANS - Donald Chester Pierce, age 92, a former resident of Saint Albans, Vermont, passed away on 28 March 2001, in Palm Coast, Florida.
He was born 3 September 1908 in Chester, Vermont, the youngest of nine children of Edward Alvin and Charlotte Louise (Woodward) Pierce.
He was a graduate of Lyndon Institute class of 1925 and earned a bachelor's of science in agriculture from the University of Vermont in 1931. He received a master's degree from that same institution in 1948.
He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Glendola (Dolly) S. Pierce in 1995. He is survived by three sons, Bruce S. Pierce, of Palm Coast, Florida; D. Gregory Pierce of St. Albans, and Stephen J. Pierce of Essex Junction. Other survivors include his five grandchildren Kealie Pierce of Mobile, Alabama, Melissa Arnold of Monson, Massachusetts; Scott Pierce of San Francisco, California; Anne-Marie Pierce of Burlington, Vermont and Abigail Pierce of St. Albans; his four great-grandchildren Melinda Sue and Ryan Arnold, Emily Pierce and Glenn Matthews; and his daughter-in- law Paula Kane. He was pre-deceased by his daughter-in-law, Ruth Pierce, of Palm Coast, Florida.
Donald was a career educator, having taught in the public high schools of Newport Center, where he served as principal, in the early thirties; as an educational adviser with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1934 to 1941, serving in Chester, Waterbury Center, and Torrington, Connecticut; and teaching agriculture at Richford High School from 1941 to 1951. In 1951, he started teaching at Bellows Free Academy in Saint Albans and later served as the headmaster there from 1960 until his retirement in 1973.
During his career, Donald participated in many educational organizations, including president of the Vermont Agriculture Teachers Association; vice-president and president of the Vermont Headmasters' Association; and serving as a delegate to annual conventions of the National Association of Secondary School Principals held in Dallas, Texas and San Francisco, California. After his retirement, he became an active member of the Association of Retired Teachers. In addition to his interest in education, Donald was an active community member and received the Paul Harris award from his fellow members of the Rotary Club of St. Albans in recognition of his many years of public service. He was a member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church of St. Albans.
Donald was a devoted husband and father. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and an active hockey fan. He was very proud of the role he played in helping to initiate the Bellows Free Academy- Saint Albans hockey program and took delight in its growth and achievements.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service is planned for later in the Spring, in St. Albans, VT. Burial and graveside committal service will also be later in the Spring, at the Lyndon Center, VT Cemetery. An announcement will be made, in the newspaper, prior to the memorial and committal services.
