Eleanor Anderson died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday (February 27, 2008), at home in Stonington. She was 88.
Elie, as she was known to both family and friends, was born in New Britain on July 9, 1919, to the late John A. and Erika (Larson) Anderson.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond, whom she met in high school. The two were married in 1947 and celebrated their sixtieth anniversary last October.
Mrs. Anderson was a graduate of New Britain High School, class of 1937, and the Moody School of Commerce, also in New Britain. She began her secretarial career with positions at the Tuttle & Bailey Company followed by the New Britain Trust Company. She left the bank to raise her family.
Later, she worked as a secretary at the South Congregational Church in New Britain and the University of Hartford.
Elie and her husband Ray retired to Stonington in 1986.
In her youth, Elie enjoyed tennis and figure skating. With her husband, she continued to skate well into the 1970's. Televised competitive figure skating events always captured her rapt attention. Elie also enjoyed music, sewing, needlepoint, gardening, and travel.
In 1946, she flew to Sweden with her mother and sister on one of the first commercial, transoceanic flights following the war. She toured the U.S. with her family on camping vacations in the 1960s. Later, Elie and her husband made numerous trips to California and the Caribbean, especially the Virgin Islands. They toured Hawaii and took several cruises, including one through the Panama Canal. She also accompanied Mr. Anderson to many U.S. Navy World War II veterans' reunions (amphibious service).
Elie is also survived by her sons Dean, of Stonington, and David, of Arroyo Grande, California, as well as several cousins in the U.S. and Sweden, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers L. Everett Anderson, and C. Verner Anderson, and sister Alphild V. Anderson. A private graveside service is planned in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360, and the Stonington Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 424, Stonington, CT 06378. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is assisting the family.
