John Jay Bentz of Eureka was a genial, jolly fellow who could get along with everyone, including family, customers and the groups he worked with in his community. The last six months or so he hadn't been well and on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, John died at Medcenter One in Bismarck, N.D., at the age of 46.

"His heart just gave out," relatives said.

The son of Alfred and Anna Marie (Rutschke) Bentz, John was born Nov. 21, 1961, in Eureka. He started school in Artas. Following the closing of the Artas School, John completed his education in Herreid, graduating with the Class of 1980. He went on to study diesel mechanics at Watertown Vo-Tech for two years.

John worked at the Cenex in Zeeland as a mechanic and later at Selby Implement as a diesel mechanic and set up mechanic. He became an equipment salesman at Haberer's Implement in Bowdle and later at K and A Implement in Eureka. Most recently he had been working in the insurance business.

He enjoyed tinkering on his tractors, playing pinochle and visiting with his friends. He was always spoiling his great niece and nephews and they always knew he would have a Tootsie Roll for them.

He was a member of Eureka Reformed Church, the Eureka Jaycees and Eureka Ambulance Association.

Survivors include his father, Alfred Bentz of Eureka; two brothers, Mark (Kathy) Bentz of Artas and Paul (Jannel) Bentz of Eureka; one sister, Ruth Ann (Larry) Kauk; 13 nieces and nephews; and one great niece and four great nephews.

His mother and one nephew preceded him in death.

The funeral for John will be Friday, Aug. 15, at Eureka Reformed Church in Eureka. Burial will be at the Artas Cemetery at Artas with Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Timothy Kauk, Anthony Kauk, Michael Bentz, Travis Bentz, Thomas Bentz, Matthew Kranzler, Marty Morlock, Tony Goldade, Larry Rutschke and David Opp. Honorary bearers will be all of his friends at the Eureka Jaycees and Eureka Ambulance Association, and his nieces, nephews and great niece and nephews.
