Henry Chapman
Co. C. 10th U.S.C.H.A

He was among about 180,000 blacks who served in the Union Army. And like an estimated two-thirds of them, Chapman is believed to have been a Southerner who fled the slavery states to the Northern free states.

Another 20,000 blacks served in the Union Navy, which admitted them for service long before the Civil War.

Chapman's tombstone notes his service in the 10th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery.
