Marshall Brevard Burkett

Services for Marshall Brevard Burkett, age 93, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Carter officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Burkett died on Oct. 26, 2011, three days short of his 94th birthday. He was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Bullard to the late Willie Minerva and Richard Henry Burkett. He lived most of his life in the Bullard, Whitehouse and Tyler areas.

On Nov. 27, 1940, he married Mildred Louise DeWitt, his wife of 54 years. He was called into service during World War II in 1944. He served in the First Army, 99th Infantry. While serving he fought in three major battles including the Ruhr Pocket, the Bridge at Remagen and the Battle of the Bulge. On one occasion he and another soldier captured 19 German soldiers. He received a Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, a Victory Medal, and a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. After the war, he returned to Tyler where he worked in a family business. Later, he went to work for Sears Roebuck until he retired.

Mr. Burkett was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Burkett; a daughter, Dianne Claudia Burkett; his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a son, Marshall D. Burkett; daughter-in-law, Lauree J. Burkett; a grandson, Marshall Bradley Burkett and wife Mandy Burkett; a granddaughter, Lauree Alicia Sherrill and husband Kevin Sherrill and three great-grandchildren, Mallory Jane Burkett, Morgan Dianne Sherrill and Marshall Jack Burkett. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Burkett, Aaron Elder, Jordan Elder, Ken Jefferson, Kevin Sherrill and Billy Walker.

He was a longtime member of Green Acres Baptist Church, where he served as a greeter.

Visitation will be at Burks Walker Tippit from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28.
