From Melvin Gilreath, a Gilreath descendent: Sally was the daughter of Henry &
Rebecca Carter Rhoten. She was the second wife of Thomas S. A. Gilreath
(1843-1902). A few years ago, Melvin found an article in the "New York Times"
about Sally, who was over 100 by then. The article was not quite accurate but
neither is her tombstone. There was also a separate article on Sally that ran
in the Clinchport, Scott County, VA, paper, again with errors.
On the 1880 US censes Sallie was listed as born in 1852, and was 28. On the
1900 census she is shown as born in March 1858? Melvin figures as she aged, she
lost track of her actual birth date.
A note on Thomas S. A. Gilreath, Sally's husband. He was born in Wilkes County,
NC, the oldest child of William B. & Nancy Ellis Gilreath. About 1845, Thomas
migrated with his parents to Scott County, VA. During the Civil War, Thomas
served with the 64th VA Infantry (1861-62) and was given a disability discharge
(reason not stated in his record). Thomas' first marriage (about 1865) was to
Hester M. Wade and they had two children, Isaac Luther and Laura M. Gilreath.
Hester probably died sometime in the mid 1860's as Thomas was married to Sally
