Royal Henry Jennings, age 26, the son of Basil G. and Elizabeth Flanary Jennings, enrolled and was mustered into the Union Army as a private on April 17, 1862 at Cumberland Ford, Kentucky for three years' service. Royal Henry had married Malinda Pendleton, the sister of Union soldiers Joseph D. & John E. Pendleton, in Scott County in 1853 and had 3 children; Mary E., Bozwell Floyd "Basil", and John Royal. He remained in eastern Kentucky until late October 1862 when he marched with his Company to Charleston, West Virginia from West Virginia he moved on to Memphis, TN in November 1862. Royal H. participated in the capture of Ft. Hindman, Arkansas on January 10, 1863. He then marched into Louisiana and remained in the Milliken Bend area until illness forced his evacuation by ship from Louisiana to the New House of Refuge in St. Louis, Missouri. He died there on April 2, 1863, of chronic dysentery and is buried in Section 1, Grave Number 8 at the National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
