In 1860 at age 15 Milton Spencer was a blacksmith apprentice living in Greensboro, Indiana, with his parents, John Spencer, 58, blacksmith, and Elizabeth, 55. Milton M Spencer, age 18, was recruited, and enrolled as a private at Indianapolis, Indiana, on September 11, 1863. He was promoted to full corporal. He transferred to the 7th Regiment, Indiana Battery, on September 21, 1864, and was discharged on August 1, 1865, for a service length of 1 year 10 months and 19 days.
His parents were living in Greensboro, Indiana, in 1870; his father, John, was 68 years old, a blacksmith, and his mother, Elizabeth, was 65. By 1890 Milton was living in El Paso, Texas.
