Grandpa Norman is the only grandfather I knew. Grandpa Markwell was gone many years before I was born.
I liked being around grandpa. He was a very kind, quiet man. He didn't like to make waves. It was said of him, when he was around democrats he was a democrat and if he was around republicans he was a republican. Mom and dad always called him pop. He never held a steady job but did farm when he was younger and later did odd jobs for people such as lawn work and general cleaning. He also worked for the WPA in the early 40's.
Mom said that she was her dad's favorite. He used to bring her candy and gifts. He brought a little white dog home one time. Mom said that grandma sold it to a traveling peddler because they needed the money.
I remember sitting next to grandpa in church. He smoked and always carried sin-sin's with him to cover the smell.
We were at grandma and grandma's house one day and grandpa took me with him to check on a job he was doing for a lady in Vandalia. Of course we walked because he did not own a car. Coming home we walked across the creek bed. It was summer and the creek was down. Grandpa showed me wild onions. I can remember the smell and taste to this day. I was nine or ten years old at the time.
Mom said they did own a car when she was much younger. It was an old touring car.
